Onetangi beach is a spectacular two kilometre long stretch of white sand and is the largest beach on the island.
Onetangi beach is Waiheke’s largest beach, with over 2km of white sand. It generally has more surf than the other northern beaches, which makes it popular for swimming and water activities. It is a popular beach and safe for swimming.
The facilities at Onetangi include public toilets, a beach store, two popular cafes, and a bus stop. Onetangi Beach does not have a children’s playground adjacent to it, but there is one further up the road within a few minutes walk.
The Beach is also the location for the annual Onetangi Beach Races, which is always a popular Waiheke Island event held in Feb/ March each year.
Dogs on Onetangi Beach
There is a seasonal council rule in place for dogs on the beach. The rule for the beach and foreshore areas state that dogs are allowed on the beach from the rocky outcrop at western end of the beach to the eastern end of the beach area during the dates below.
Dogs are prohibited covering all beach and foreshore areas westwards of the rocky outcrop at the northern end of beach at all times.
Seasonal rule:
From 1 December to 1 March. On public holidays and weekends between Labour weekend and Easter weekend.
10 am to 5pm – Prohibited
Before 10 am and after 5pm – Under control, off the leash.
All other times – Under control, off the leash.
Always follow the rules on park signs even if the information we have online does not match them.
