Waiheke Rugby Club is unique in New Zealand – it’s an an old-style ‘country club’ with family values – but it’s only a 35-minute fast-ferry ride from the metropolitan buzz of New Zealand’s biggest city, Auckland. It’s also NZ”s only ‘island’ rugby club – situated on a magical island in the Hauraki Gulf. Population 8500 – 30,000+ in summer.
The club plays its games in Auckland competitions, meaning Waiheke teams travel to the city every second week during the Rugby season – April-August.
On alternate weeks teams travel to Waiheke and get to experience what a ‘country club’ is all about – every visiting team is fed (barbecues) and enjoys laid-back island hospitality.
Waiheke Rugby fields some 10 teams – from Under 5’s “nursery” grade to Seniors who turn out for somewhat competitive social games.
The club’s 10 teams operate in three divisions:
1. Junior club – seven competitive age-grade teams from Under 5 nursery grade thru to Under 12’s.
2. Waiheke High School – their two teams play in Waiheke Rugby’s colours – on the OSP grounds – with Waiheke Rugby supplying jerseys, shorts, socks and tracksuits, plus providing assistance with travel and management. This year the club and the high school are introducing a rugby academy at the school to foster young sporting talent.
3. Two adult men’s teams play in the Under 85kgs and Senior “social” divisions. For the past two years Waiheke has been the reigning Auckland Senior champion side.
