Shelly Beach is a lovely sheltered beach lined with pohutakawa trees, on the southern side of the island, in Putaki Bay.
Located off Shelly Beach Road, the beach is secluded and less-populated than the northern beaches which makes this a nice spot for a quiet picnic. The beach is, as the name suggests, a shelly beach, The best swimming times are at high-tide, and this is a popular spot for sea kayaking and other water-activities.
There is a boat ramp and a jetty, however there are no public toilets located at Shelly Beach – the nearest amenities are located a 10 minute walk away at the opposite end of the causeway towards the corner of Causeway Road and Wharf Road.
A number of the island’s buses pass by Shelly Beach Road, which makes it possible to get there by public transport.
