Mary has returned to New Zealand, her homeland, after 28 years in Sydney, Australia. She is well acclaimed there, having exhibited regularly in Willoughby City and Waverly Art Prizes, and the North Sydney Art Prize, where she won the Drawing Category. Her work is held in collections in Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland and Hong Kong.
The vast geography of Banks Peninsula combined with childhood memories of growing up in the South Island has embedded in Mary a recurring fascination with water, movement and form. Mary pursues her highly personal and intimate style through rigorous studio investigations. She is challenged by the diversity of found materials on Waiheke Island, included in her mixed media work. Drawing and painting on site, finding fresh ‘framed’ intimate views around each bend in the road, provides an important departure from indoor studio work and has encouraged new development in her expression of the landscape.
